Introducing the production team for THE COLOR PURPLE

Eric Seale, the Artistic Director of the Hickory Community Theatre, has gathered an experienced and talented creative team to stage the upcoming production of the powerful Broadway musical THE COLOR PURPLE. The team includes guest director Tiffany Christian, music director LaKeisha Ross-Johnson, choreographer Anyea Gibson, and stage manager Allison Finch. The show begins performances in the Jeffers Theatre on January 21.

THE COLOR PURPLE is Christian’s fifth time in the director’s chair at HCT. Her previous credits directing credits include SKELETON CREW in 2021, A RAISIN IN THE SUN in 2020, I AND YOU in 2019, and DREAMGIRLS in 2018. Her other stage work includes roles in RAGTIME, NUNSENSE, THE REVOLUTIONISTS, and NOISES OFF. She loves HCT so much that she drives down from Boone. "There are opportunities for me here that I just don't find anywhere else," she said. Christian has graduate degrees in Education, Social Work and Theology. 

This is Ross-Johnson’s second outing with HCT. She directed last season’s smash production of EVITA. She began pursuing her dream of a musical career at Lenoir-Rhyne University. She has created a soundtrack for Hickory Museum of Art’s digital presentation called “Rhythm & Rights” and works with 3M Productions in their stage plays. The most enjoyable times in her theatre career were playing the roles of Geneva Lee Brown in 1940s Radio Hour and Sarah in Ragtime.

This is also Gibson’s second time out with HCT, as well as her second time working with Ross-Johnson. They collaborated on EVITA when Gibson was the choreographer. She is a fifth-grade teacher at Viewmont Elementary School and was named Teacher of the Year by Hickory Public Schools in June 2020. She also teaches dance at Ann Freeman Dance Academy. Gibson holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a master’s in Elementary Education from Appalachian State University.

Finch has been involved in four HCT productions, the most recent being THE THANKSGIVING PLAY last month, where she played Logan. Other theatre credits include MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM with the Green Room Community Theatre. Her other previous HCT experiences were SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE and NOISES OFF. Finch has a Bachelor of Arts degree from UNC Greensboro.

Performances of THE COLOR PURPLE will be held on Fridays and Saturdays, January 21 through February 5 at 7:30 pm; Sunday, January 30 at 2:30 pm and Thursday, February 3 at 7:30 pm. Opening night, January 21 features reduced-price tickets: $12 for adults and $10 for youth & students. Tickets for all other performances are $16 for adults and $10 for youth and students.

Mallory Rhoney, who plays Snake Eyes (a member of Fat Sam’s gang) in Bugsy Malone , is a seventh grader at Grandview Middle School in Hickory. This is her first big production, but she has written and directed her own, original plays while she was a student at Oakwood Elementary.  "I auditioned for Bugsy Malo ne, ” she said, “because I thought it would be really fun to be a gangster. I like that Snake Eyes is in a lot of dancing scenes and funny scenes." "My favorite thing about Hickory Community Theatre is that all the people are just so nice and supportive." At school, Rhoney is in Wyldlife and Band.  Outside of school, she enjoys singing, ukulele and piano. “Musical chops run in my family,” she says. “my great grandfather was Loonis McGlohon, a world-renowed pianist and songwriter.”  She also likes rollerblading, hiking, swimming, skiing, art, crafts and traveling. Meet Doodle from BUGSY MALONE

Karson Byers, who plays Doodle (a member of Dandy Dan’s gang) in Bugsy Malone is in the sixth grade at Hickory Day School. That’s also where she’s had all of his theatre experience so far.  “I auditioned for Bugsy Malone,” she says, “because it ounded like fun and I've been really interested in acting! The character name 'Doodle', it fits me perfect, I love to draw!!" "The people working at HCT are so nice and very supportive!”  Byers is in the National Elementary Honor Society and received an award in the Radiant Piece Art Competition. She fills her free time with drawing, singing, skiing, volleyball, cross-country running and basketball.

Introducing the PUFFS Ensemble!

Acting in the ensemble for Puffs , the new comedy by Matt Cox, is an energetically fun time for any actor. Each of them has to play multiple roles, from students to teachers to villains, sometimes at the drop of a hat. The Hickory Community Theatre production, which runs October 15-30, has seven talented actors who are up to the challenge. They are Jenni Canterbury, Theresa Decker, Caleb Ernsberger, Betsy Pipher, Jennifer Leigh, Will Vogler and Jared Wachsmuth. ( Back row, L-R) Betsy Pipher, Theresa Decker, Caleb Ernsberger, Jennifer Leigh,  (front) Will Vogler, Jenni Canterbury and Jared Wachsmuth   Canterbury has been on the HCT stage multiple times before, sometimes with a mermaid fin and sometimes in her skivvies, but until now she has yet to wield a magic wand. Decker is excited to be joining HCT for the first time. Many years ago in the faraway land of St. Louis, she starred in several productions, including DRACULA, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, and ARSENIC AND OLD LACE.
